The Youth Championships at Crystal Palace on 1st/2nd May
There was some excellent swimming and 30 Event Best performance times achieved in the Youth Championships Weekend, among them 3 for Melako Coker and 3 for Ekaterina Avramova both from Ealing and Karley Mann from Hillingdon.
There were some hard fought races, but the most exciting was the men’s 17/o 100m Backstroke where there was a dead heat for first place for Charlie Boldison (Barnet Copthall) and Jamie Smithers (Ealing) in 59.10. Also exciting was the Mens 1500m with Michael Gunning 16.37.44 and Edward Graham (Camden Swiss Cottage) 16.37.56
It was also good to see the Disability Swimmers taking part and Sarah Louise Casey of Sharks achieved two European Records in her category.

London disabled team shines at British championships
London region fielded its largest team ever at the British International Disability Swimming Championships in April with 11 swimmers competing. Susie Rodgers (Otter) swam superbly, breaking two British records in S7. In the 50m butterfly she took nearly two tenths of a second off the record she set at last year’s event with a time of 00:40:35. She touched first in the multi-disability final but was ranked second after Israeli swimmer Inbal Shwartz.

School Swimming Survey
The ASA school swimming team are currently trying to build up a picture of thoughts and opinions on the minimum requirements for school swimming.
This will not take too much time, but the more viewpoints we can collect, the greater the understanding of school swimming requirements they can gain.
The PlaySport London: Facility Fund goes 'live'
Expressions of interest are invited for round one of the Mayor's PlaySport London facility fund.
The PlaySport London Facility Fund is part of the Mayor's commitment to deliver a sporting legacy from the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The fund is an integral part of ‘A Sporting Future for London’, the Mayor’s plan which aims to get more people active in sport, strengthen sporting infrastructure in the capital, build capacity and skills and strengthen delivery. The plan sets out four key goals: Get more people active; Transform the sporting Infrastructure; Build capacity and skills; Maximise the benefits of sport to our society.
The Facility Fund aims to address goals one and two of the plan. Seven million pounds will be invested from 2010 - 2012 for projects that help to ensure an increase in sports participation and physical activity by providing affordable, good quality local facilities within local communities.
Two levels of grant are available from the fund:
1. Up to £50k (PlaySport London funding not to exceed 60% of total project costs). These grants are designed for small to medium developments and upgrades to facilities. Examples include multi use games areas (MUGAs), refurbishment of indoor facilities and estate based ball courts.
2. Up to £250k (PlaySport London funding not to exceed 30% of total project costs). These grants are designed for medium to large developments and the building of new facilities. Examples include multi sport hubs and indoor facilities. For more details click

Dive Recorder Training Course now available

Bring your completed form and photographs when you come to officiate at a London Swimming Championships and we will send it off for you (and we will pay the licensing fee).
Licensing Update - In order for Officials to become licensed or renew their existing licenses, they must provide evidence of attending CPD courses (mandatory elements for licensing) on:
British Swimming Officials Awareness Module: Contemporary Issues such as Health & Safety, Child Protection etc; and FINA Rules update. soc@middlesexswimming.com These will be presented by Middlesex County at a presentation on Sat 22nd May at Perivale Community Centre, Horsenden Lane South, Perivale, Middlesex UB6 7NP.

Invitation to join 2010-11 Essex League Competition
As the current season draws to a close the Essex Swimming League are inviting any new clubs potentially interested in joining the next season’s competition to contact us via our website
www.essexswimleague.org.uk . The Essex Swimming League is a long standing ASA-registered team competition comprising four evening galas held on selected Saturday evenings between September and April each year. There are currently four divisions comprising over 20 teams from the London and East region. Gala events are a mixture of age-bounded individual and team relay races. We are inviting additional clubs who may wish to joins us in the forthcoming season to get in contact.

The Amateur Swimming Association (the ASA) is the national governing body for Swimming. The ASA is working with local authorities, leisure centres and swimming pools to encourage people back to swimming. You may have heard of the Free Swimming initiative where anyone under 16 or over 60 can swim for free in all participating areas. Swimming is the highest participation sport in the UK but there are many people who still don’t swim even though they might like to. Our Trainee Aquatic Assistants will play a key role in encouraging all ages and abilities of the community to visit their swimming pool and take part in free swimming lessons, aquatic fitness sessions and much more. They will be part of a team helping to improve the experience of customers visiting the pool and ensuring that they make the most of the facilities on offer. For more details click
