Lewisham wins battle of London boroughs
Six London boroughs battled it out in Mile End last week to take the title of top borough in the annual Inter-borough Disability Swimming Championships. Lewisham finished top with 146 points, squeezing past Greenwich and Sutton in the last few races.
The Lewisham team of 16 swimmers took golds in 11 individual events and won both the women’s medley relay and freestyle relay. In the men’s events Stephen Bailey took two individual golds in 100m breaststroke and backstroke while teammate Lauren Kirby also won two events in the women’s 50m fly and IM.
Greenwich’s team of 14 finished with 130 points and five individual golds. Alex Bailey was the team’s most successful swimmer with gold in the men’s 50m fly and silver in the IM.
Sutton fielded 13 swimmers in two teams and finished third with 109 points having won 15 individual events and the men’s relay. Michael Herneman, Luke Mills, Jack Chandler and Zach Wright all won two individual events each as did Emma Rogers and Hannah Floey in the women’s events.
Hackney and Tower Hamlets fielded a joint team which finished fourth, the most successful swimmer being Jessica Harper with two individual golds in the girl’s 50m breaststroke and fly. Barking & Dagenham finished fifth with seven swimmers winning individual events, and Waltham Forest with the smallest team, finished sixth with five individual golds two of which were won by Stephen Dodd.
Nine members of London’s Disability swimming squad competed at the event.
