Water polo NewsJohn Lake has been awarded an asa Services to Sport award. Not many amateur sportspeople can say that they are really good at a sport, few are good at two.  John Lake has been very good at three! At 67 John is an elder statesman of swimming and water polo but in his long career he has mastered three sports, adding football to the aquatic disciplines. The award was presented to him in Manchester at a recent water polo event. Congratulations!!!!!

Colin Brown (RD) – Colin has had productive meetings with the LDA, Sport England with regard to London Legacy and facility planning. Colin also met with the Clubs in Barking & Dagenham to discuss implementing the Aquatic Strategy in the Borough.
Next week: Colin will be attending ASA meetings in Loughborough, visiting Crystal Palace to check on the refurbishment and Brent to look at a site for a potential mobile pool.

Jo Calvino (Aquatic Programme Development Co-ordinator) has spent the week walking everywhere due to being snowed in but has been chasing athletes, facilities, coaches and tutors for many up and coming master classes taking place this year.
Jo has been spending time focusing on the advertising side of the programme as well as getting the early planning stages for the Annual Conference 2009, which can be confirmed as September 14th at St Pauls School, SW13.
Places are still available for the Karlyn Pipes-Nielson & Melanie Marshall Master Classes, remember these are for all ages & abilities, competitive or recreational swimmers, so if you think you know someone who may be interested or wants some technical advice please forward it on.
This week saw an article for synchronised swimming go out on Monday’s London Lite in the Health & Fitness section, that Jo has been trying to organise for some time, but the article is a great promotion for the discipline, and we are now looking at promoting the rest of the aquatic disciplines in the same way! See the full article at  http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1135802/Sync-swim-bikini-workout.html

This week Mark Griggs (EO) has been thankful for being snowed in for 3 days as it has given him time to catch up on his outstanding emails and set up a number of new courses and CPDs in London.

This has been Janna Callan’s (RDO) final week at work before she starts her maternity leave.  Therefore, Janna has been exceptionally busy completing projects and tasks.  Janna’s main concern was to ensure that Jemma Konuralp received a good handover to ensure that the club’s working towards Swim 21 in London could continue to do so and that Jemma had a strong understanding of the issues they are working through.  Janna also had a detailed handover with Michelle Weltman to ensure that the London Swimming Disability Championship progresses, which will be held on the 19th September 2009 at East Ham Leisure Centre.
Janna fully intends on keeping up to date with the London Swimming activities as will be volunteering at some events, has signed up to the weekly news and will be attending team days once a month.  Janna would like to thank everyone for their support over the past three and a half years and looks forward to returning to work at the end of 2009.

This week Annabel Kehoe (EDS – Islington) attempted to get to work on Monday (honest!) but wasn’t going to argue with shutters down at the tube station. Instead she turned to snowman making. After the joviality of Monday, Annabel ensured that the first lessons of the £10 for 10 adult swimming lessons went smoothly. Over 400 adults will be learning to swim in Islington over the next two months as part of the Everyday Swim Project. Annabel has also been working on collating all the numbers for the numerous interventions to ensure the good practice is disseminated. The week concluded by attending the London Swimming staff meeting.
Next week Annabel will be meeting with Jo Calvino to discuss the possibility of Islington hosting some Master Classes.

This week Jo Melchior (EDS – Lewisham) has been catching up after her week's leave. Jo has been working alongside consultants in Lewisham working towards the production of strategic plans for swimming in the Borough after the completion of Everyday Swim in March. Jo has also been starting to collate all the final monitoring information needed for the project as decided in conjunction with Sheffield hallam University. Next week Jo will be working on Key Stage 2 planning for the year ahead, and preparing the Primary School gala and the event programme for March which will see the promotion of the achievements of Everyday Swim to the stakeholders and public in Lewisham.

This week Jemma Konuralp (Swim21 Quality coordinator) was stopped from visiting Streatham SC as planned due to the snow she has therefore rescheduled this visit for March.  This week she has therefore been working very hard with a number of clubs who hope to obtain swim21 accreditation in March.  Next week she is visiting London Borough of Redbridge SC with Saxon Crown to hopefully start to build links between the clubs.  She is also visiting Erith and District to obtain the last pieces of information for their swim21 application, Greenwich Borough Mariners to discuss when they want to start their re-accreditation assessments and Wandsworth SC to conduct the second round of interviews.

Bastien Wallace (Project Manager Barking & Dagenham) - This week it’s been less on the splashing and bubbles for me and more on the slipping and crashing as I provide ‘entertainment for all’ attempting to cycle in the snow, and then on the ice.  I’ve taken advantage of the opportunity to stay inside to work on the new web-site, Apprenticeship and the upcoming Gala day. The photos from the photo day have arrived – some really wonderful shots – and once names and faces are matched to consent forms we will have a stunning photo library.
